متن کاملDesorption of H from Si(111) by resonant excitation of the Si-H vibrational stretch mode.
Past efforts to achieve selective bond scission by vibrational excitation have been thwarted by energy thermalization. Here we report resonant photodesorption of hydrogen from a Si(111) surface using tunable infrared radiation. The wavelength dependence of the desorption yield peaks at 0.26 electron volt: the energy of the Si-H vibrational stretch mode. The desorption yield is quadratic in the ...
متن کاملObservation of a change of vibrational excitation mechanism with surface temperature: HCl collisions with Au(111).
We have measured the vibrational excitation probability (Pv) of HCl incident on a Au(111) surface at kinetic energies (Ei) of 0.59 eV to 1.37 eV and surface temperatures (Ts) of 273 K to 1073 K. For all energies, the slope of the Pv as a function of Ts exhibits a sharp increase above Ts approximately 800 K. We show this change in slope and the threshold behavior of Pv to be consistent with a ch...
متن کاملThe Negligible Role of C−H Stretch Excitation in the Physisorption of CH4 on Pt(111)
We report a molecular beam study of the effect of vibrational excitation on the physisorption of methane on a Pt(111) surface. Our experiments use a continuous molecular beam of CH4, prepared in its antisymmetic C−H stretch mode ν3 by infrared laser pumping via rapid adiabatic passage. Physisorbed CH4(ads) is detected on a Pt(111) surface by reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy. At a sur...
متن کاملLaser-induced photochemistry of methane on Pt(111): Excitation mechanism and dissociation dynamics
Adsorption states and photochemistry of methane and deuterated methane on a Pt~111! surface have been investigated by measuring temperature-programmed desorption spectra, x-ray photoelectron spectra, work function changes, and angle-resolved time-of-flight distributions of desorbed species. Methane weakly adsorbed on the Pt~111! surface at 40 K is dissociated to methyl and hydrogen fragments wi...
